MICHAEL O”MEARA’S FAMILY HISTORY

 Thady OMeara was born about 1654. Thady married Mary Eagan.

 They had the following children:

Daniel OMeara (Thady) was born in Birr, County Offaly, Ireland.

Daniel had the following children:

I. John OMeara

II. Patrick OMeara

III. James OMeara was born in 1764. He died on Dec 31, 1832 in Birr, County Offaly, Ireland. He was buried in Tipperary,Borrisokane, Church of Ireland.

IV. Michael OMeara died 1834 in Birr, County Offaly, Ireland. Michael married Elizabeth Maher.

They had the following children:

i. Michael OMeara was born 1799. He died 1898.

ii. Daniel OMeara was born about 1812 in Borrisokane, Tipperary. He died on Apr 19, 1859 in Pembroke, Ontario Canada

iii. Edward OMeara was born 1822.

iv. John OMeara was born in 1823. He died on Jan 17, 1854 in Ottawa, Notre Dame Cemetery. John married Margaret McCarthy.

v. William OMeara was born about 1833.

 

Michael OMeara (Michael, Daniel, Thady) was born in 1799 & died 1898. Michael opened the first post office in Navan in 1861. It is reported that the name for Navan was given by Michael after a well-known Irish town of Navan in the County Meath. The streets of Fairgreen and Trim Road are named after the streets in his home parish. They arrived in Canada in 1835 (about the same time as the Kenny’s and Madden’s and settled in Longueil now known as L’Orignal. Shortly afterwards they moved to E ½  Lot 11 Concession 7 in Cumberland. Michael married Julia Theresa Madden daughter of Michael Madden and Mary Nolan about 1820. Julia was born in 1805 in Ireland, Tipperary, Barony of Lower Ormond, Parish of Borrisokane. She died in 1877.

 

Michael and Julia OMeara had the following children:

John OMeara born in 1820. He died Aug 14, 1910. Buried N.D.C.

Catherine OMeara born in 1825. She died Jan. 7, 1914.

Mary Ann OMeara was born 1833. She died Aug. 27 1852

Michael OMeara was born July 15, 1838. He died about 1878

Ellen Mary OMeara was born July 2, 1840. She died June 16, 1915.

John James OMeara was born July 1842.

Elizabeth OMeara was born Aug 15, 1844. She died Feb. 9, 1916.

Julia OMeara was born June 20, 1846.

Margaret OMeara was born in 1851.

John OMeara married Ellen Kinsella, daughter of Michael Kinsella & Mary Lacey.  On 14 Feb. 1859 in St. Andrews. Ellen was born 1837. She died Dec. 30, 1902. She was buried in Notre Dame Cemetery, Ottawa. They had Mary OMeara who was born in 1873. She died March 8, 1891 and was buried in Notre Dame Cemetery.

 

Catherine OMeara was buried in St. Hughes Cemetery, SarsfiekL She was born in. 1825 & emigrated to Canada in 1838. She leaves sons John and Dennis in Trona, Oregon and sons Michael in Utica, N. Y. and Henry of Navan.

 

Catherine married Michael Henry Kenny, son of Michael Kenny and Honora Madden, Nov. 16, 1851. Michael was born about 1823 in Tipperary, Ireland. He died Jan 20, 1891 in Navan, Ontario and is buried in St. Hughes Cemetery, Sarsfield. Michael and Catherine married in 1851 and resided in Aylmer, Quebec until 1857 when they purchased the farm in Navan, Cumberland Township W ½  Lot 11 7th Concession.

 

This farm was originally owned by Michael OMeara, the father of Catherine OMeara. In regard to the 5 boys, Frank Kenny is quoted as saying that 3 of the boys went to Oregon and became successful lumbermen. Frank’s father, Henry, went to Wisconsin in 1893 but he left there in 1900 to return to marry Frank’s mother Maggie Shea in 1902.

 

Michael and Catherine Kenny had the following children:

 

Julie Anna Kenny was born August 5, 1853 in Aylmer Quebec. She died Apr 25, 1854 and is buried in St. Paul’s Cemetery, Aylmer.

Margaret Kenny was born Jan. 16, 1855. She died in 1929.

Michael Kenny was born Aug 30, 1856. He died Nov 21, 1950.

John J. Kenny was born Jan 5, 1859. He died April 30, 1938.

Dennis Kenny was born in 1860.

Mary Ann Kenny was christened June 8, 1862. She died in 1862.

James Kenny was born in 1864. While at work he was accidentally killed by a beam which fell hitting him on the head. James was married to Mary Cummings.

Annie Kenny was born April 5, 1866. She died Aug 14, 1913.

Henry Augusta Kenny was born April 5, 1866. He died on Jan 31, 1949.

 

Mary Ann OMeara was born in 1833 in Tipperary. She died Aug 27, 1852 in Buckingham, Quebec. Mary married Peter Brady, son of Edward Brady and Mary O’Farrell on Sept 29, 1851 in Buckingham, Quebec. They lived at Masson, Quebec.

 

Peter and Mary had the following children:

Mary Theresa Brady was born in 1852.

Michael OMeara was born July 15, 1838 in Navan, Cumberland Township. He died 1878. They lived in Ottawa. Michael worked for the government. Michael married Elizabeth Lahan and had the following children:

Mary Jane OMeara born Aug 17, 1870

Ellen Mary OMeara was born July 2, 1840. She died June 16, 1915 in Sarsfield. Ellen and her husband Thomas   Of the name Sarsfield. Sarsfield was a famous Irish general. Mr. Delaney was a carpenter and did some of the work on the exterior of Mr. Clark’s store. He also built the church rectory at Sarsfield.

 

Ellen married Thomas Delaney, son of Daniel Delaney & Catherine Fahey on Aug. 1, 1860 in Notre Dame Cathedral, Ottawa. Thomas was born in 1836 in Nepean, Ontario. He died Nov. 7, 1914 in Sarsfield. He was also Navan Post Office keeper about 1856.

 

 

John James OMeara was born in 1842 in Navan, Cumberland Township. He was appointed post master in Navan for the period 1884-85. The post office existed before the bank and money orders and postal notes were common tender. John married Anne Burns, daughter of Thomas Burns & Catherine Dwyer. They had 9 children.

 

30F         Elizabeth OMeara was born Aug. 15, 1844 in Navan, Cumberland Township. She died Feb. 9, 1916 and is buried in Elizabeth married Roderick McDonald, son of Angus McDonald & Catherine McDonald about 1870. He died Dec.20, 1925.

 

Rory was a Scottish lumberman and he and his wife acquired a section of the OMeara farm where Don and Joan Rathwell lived (Colonial Road across from The Wilson Cemetery). They raised 8 children.

 

Julia OMeara was born June 20, 1846 in Cumberland Township. Julia married Hugh McKinley, son of Richard McKinley and Margaret McNeil. They had Ida McKinley.

 

Margaret OMeara was born 1851 in Navan, Cumberland Township. Margaret married John Shea in 1875. They had 1 daughter, Julia Shea.

Henry Augusta Kenny was born April 5, 1866 in Navan. He died Jan 31, 1949 and is buried in St. Hughes Cemetery, Sarsfield. He returned home to Navan from Wisconsin around 1900 and on Sept. 24, 1902 married Maggie Shea of Bearbrook.

 

Henry and Margaret Kenny had 6 children:

Mary Kathleen Kenny was born Dec. 6, 1903. She lived in Garson, Sudbury Ontario. Mary married John Donnelly on Sept. 22, 1926. John was born May 23, 1890 in Northern Ireland. He died Jan. 4, 1960 in Thompson, Manitoba.

 

Mary and John Donnelly had 4 children.

Father Kenny Anthony Donnelly was born Aug. 17, 1927. Kenny was ordained April 4, 1953 in Pro Cathedral, Assumption North Bay, Little Current, Manitoulin Island.

John Jack Jr. Donnelly was born June 12, 1935. He died Feb. 29, 1996.

Francis Donnelly was born Oct. 31, 1943.

Colleen Mary Catherine Donnelly was born April 20, 1931.

 

Julia Annetta Kenny was born Oct. 2, 1905. She died Oct. 10, 1996. She was a teacher and lived in Navan. She was awarded the Canadian Medal of Honour for her lifetime work aiding the poor. Annetta married Alton Percival McDonald, son of John Alex McDonald and Bridget Brennan on Sept. 20, 1928. Alton was born Jan. 5, 1899. He died Nov. 21, 1969 in Sarsfield. He was buried in St. Hughes Cemetery Sarsfield. They had one son

Frank McDonald born June 26, 1940.

 

Elizabeth Stella Kenny was born Jan. 7, 1908. She died on Nov. 14. 1997. Elizabeth married Archie Kennedy on July 1, 1937. Archie was born Feb. 27. 1905. He died Sept. 5. 1989 in Hamilton. Elizabeth was teacher. They lived for a while in Sudbury but later moved to Ancaster, Ontario. They had 2 children: Patricia Kennedy born May 22,. 1940, married Robert Johnson in 1962; and Cheryl Kennedy.

 

Margaret Alma Kenny was born August 16, 1910. She died Feb. 26, 1995. She was a teacher who lived in Belleville, Ontario. Margaret Alma married Joseph John Peter James MeLaren on July 16, 1941. Joseph was born Feb. 28,

1892. He died May 5, 1980. They had Margaret Mary McLaren June 18, 1942. J. Francis Henry Kenny was born Aug. 27, 1912. He died March 27, 1998 in Navan, Ontario. Frank’s obituary on file at the CTHS states Frank is related to the John Donnelly’s of Sudbury, the Alton McDonald’s of Navan, the Archie Kennedy’s of Ancaster, the Joseph McLaren’s of Belleville and the George Thomas’s of Ottawa. In an article written for the CTHS, Frank outlined the history of the Kenny and OMeara families.

 

J. Francis Henry Kenny was born Aug. 27, 1912.  He dided March 27, 1998 in Navan, Ontario.  Frank’s obituary on file at the Cumberland Township Historical Society (CTHS) states Frank is related to John Donnelly’s Sudbury, the Alton McDonald’s of Navan, the Archie Kennedy’s of Ancaster, the Joesph McLean’s of Belleville and George Thomas’s of Ottawa. In an article written for the CTHS, Frank outlined the history of the Kenny and OMeara families.

 

Frank was a very respected farmer who prospered in spite of having lost his left arm while helping Norman Edwards repair a hay baler, early in life. He was an elected church trustee as well as serving as an elected Councillor for Cumberland Township for eight years. Frank was well-known and respected in Queens Park by the Ontario politicians of the day. J. Francis Henry Kenny married Rita McMahon, daughter of John McMahon and Mary Ann Brearton, on Oct. 23, 1948 in Ottawa. Rita was born June 12, 1918.

Mark Kenny was born in 1959 and died in 1959.

Gertrude Lorette Carmel Kenny was born Aug. 27,1912 in Navan, Ontario. Gertrude married George Thomas on March 17, 1945 in Ottawa. George died on March 9, 1976. They had 4 daughters.

 

Frank McDonald (Julia Annette Kenny, Henry Augustus Kenny, Catherine OMeara, Michael, Michael, Daniel, Thady) was born June 26, 1940.

Frank married (1) Gail Grimes Oct. 24, 1964.

They had 2 children:

Mark Christopher McDonald born Oct. 8, 1965

Jody Lee McDonald         born Jan. 18, 1970

 

Cathy Kenny was born July 19, 1949 Cathy married Tim Slack in August 1970.

They had the following children:

Henry Kenny was born May 12, 1952. Henry married Cathy MeCallum.
